Biography
Matt Clark (born 1971, Amarillo, Texas) is a Dallas–Fort Worth–based painter, educator, and arts entrepreneur recognized for luminous abstract paintings that build visual depth through repeated layers of application, removal, compression, and revision. Born in Amarillo and professionally connected to the Fort Worth art community from the beginning of his career, Clark’s practice is rooted in a sustained inquiry into place—physical, psychological, and spiritual—and into the capacity of paint to preserve a record of time and decision.[1][2]
Clark received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Arizona State University, Tempe, in 1995. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 2002. His art-historical training and advanced studio education inform a practice that joins formal rigor with an intuitive, materially driven approach to abstraction.[2][1]
Clark’s paintings develop through accumulated processes: paint is scraped, spread, sanded, poured, compressed, and at times obscured by subsequent layers. Rather than treating the surface as a finished image alone, he uses it as a field in which prior gestures remain partially visible, creating a visual history of both construction and erasure. Deep color fields, shifts in opacity, and variations in surface texture produce an atmospheric sense of movement and stillness. The resulting works can suggest suspended moments—images that seem at once geological, photographic, and psychological.[3][2]
The artist’s work is distinguished by its openness to chance within a disciplined process. Clark places deliberate decisions beside accidental effects, allowing the tension between material presence and optical illusion to animate each composition. Since receiving his MFA, Clark has exhibited extensively in Texas and throughout the United States. His solo exhibitions have included Matt Clark: The Cranbrook Paintings at Artspace111 in Fort Worth (2002); Recent Paintings at Conduit Gallery, Dallas (2007), and Kidder Smith Gallery, Boston (2005); London Paintings at Conduit Gallery and Past, Present, Future at Artspace111 (both 2009); Viscous Songs at A. Beadles Fine Art, Carbondale, Colorado (2010); Manufactured Beauty at Conduit Gallery (2011); Underwater at Scott + Cooner, Dallas (2013); Union at Conduit Gallery (2013); Serendipity at Conduit Gallery (2015); Fracture at Artspace111 (2017); Maitri at Conduit Gallery (2017); and Kismet: Matt Clark + Stanley Korshak in Dallas (2018). He has also collaborated with artist Jackson Echols in exhibitions including Mimesis at Conduit Gallery.[1]
Clark has been an active participant in the broader North Texas visual-arts community, exhibiting at institutions and venues including the University of Texas at Arlington, Dallas Contemporary, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Artspace111, Conduit Gallery, Cranbrook Museum of Art, and the Arlington Museum of Art. He was included in Artspace111’s 2020 anniversary exhibition, Studio111: Collective Inspiration, which recognized artists associated with the gallery’s historic studio community.[4][1]
In addition to his studio practice, Clark serves as an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he contributes to the education of emerging artists and arts professionals. His work is represented in Dallas by Conduit Gallery and is held in more than 20 international corporate collections, including collections associated with DaimlerChrysler, Hyatt, Hilton, MGM Grand, Four Seasons, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Fidelity Investments, UT Southwestern, and The Venetian Resort in Macao.[2][1]
Clark continues to live and work in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, advancing a body of abstract painting in which material transformation becomes a record of inquiry, faith, perseverance, and experience.
