Willibald de Cabrera
Biography
Willibald de Cabrera is a Mexican-born figurative painter whose work reflects a sustained devotion to the expressive potential of the human form. Born in 1968 in Puerta de Cabrera, Durango, Mexico, he began drawing at the age of six, developing an early and lasting affinity for figurative imagery. His artistic training commenced during secondary school under painter Efraín Rincón Lira and continued at the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura del Estado de Durango, which he entered at age sixteen.[1]
By nineteen, de Cabrera was working as a graphic-design artist in Matamoros, Mexico. He relocated to the United States in 1992 and further developed his command of drawing and painting at El Paso Community College, where he studied with Phil Behymer. This period strengthened the disciplined draftsmanship and close observation that remain central to his work.[1]
De Cabrera’s paintings are distinguished by an emphasis on the figure—often dancers, bullfighters, nudes, and portrait subjects—rendered with attention to anatomy, gesture, atmosphere, and emotional presence. In 2000, he adopted the professional name “de Cabrera” in homage to his hometown. He became a full-time artist in 2001 and has since presented solo exhibitions, participated in numerous gallery exhibitions, and received Best of Show recognition in El Paso’s Sun Bowl Competition.[1]
Working within a tradition that values technical facility and the enduring visual language of figurative painting, Willibald de Cabrera creates images that unite formal discipline with a deeply personal engagement with movement, character, and the beauty of the observed world.
