Harvey Johnson (b. 1947, Port Arthur, Texas) spent more than five decades as one of American art's most vital and enduring voices. A painter, printmaker, draftsman, and longtime educator at Texas Southern University — where he studied under the legendary John Biggers — Johnson forged a visual language rooted in African diasporic memory, spiritual endurance, and the living history of Black communities in America. Often called a "visual poet," his figurative works weave ancestral symbolism, sacred geometry, and the coded wisdom of Negro Spirituals into compositions of profound beauty and depth.
